Dr. Lincoln Parkes is a retired veterinarian who has dedicated his life to helping disabled dogs regain their mobility and joy. He is the founder of K-9 Carts, a company that produces custom-made wheelchairs for dogs with various conditions that affect their ability to walk.
Parkes’ passion for helping dogs started in the 1960s when he was working as an orthopedic veterinary surgeon at the Animal Medical Center in New York City. One day, a man brought him a paralyzed pup that had been hit by a car. The man was considering putting his beloved pet to sleep, as he saw no hope for his recovery. But Parkes had a different idea. He built a simple cart for the pup and attached it to his hind legs. Then he threw a frisbee and watched the pup chase it with enthusiasm. It was a moment that changed Parkes’ life and career.
Since then, Parkes has devoted his time and energy to designing and improving wheelchairs for dogs in need. He has created several models of K-9 Carts that are tailored to fit the dog’s size, weight, and condition, and ensure that they are comfortable and easy to use.
He has also assisted other animals, such as cats, rabbits, pigs, and even a chicken. He works from his home in Oxford, Maryland, where he spends eight to 10 hours a day crafting wheelchairs for his furry clients. He also provides support and advice to the owners on how to care for their disabled pets.
Parkes is now 92 years old, but he has no plans to stop working or helping animals. He says that seeing the dogs’ faces light up when they get their new wheels is his greatest reward. He also says that he is always looking for ways to improve his design and create better products for his customers. He is currently working on a new design that he claims will be different from any other.
